Other authors question the benefits of traditional publishing. “Why would you want to be traditionally published if you’re doing well on your own? Last time I worked with a traditional publisher, the title and the cover changed and the publisher insisted that I remove one chapter to shorten the book. I will never let that happen again,” says Stephanie Chandler, author and CEO of the Nonfiction Authors Association. “If you have a budget, inclination, and the drive to do it yourself, I don’t think you need a traditional publisher.” It is difficult but not impossible for you to get your books into specialty stores and wholesalers, according to Chandler, who suggests sending your self-published books to the Small Press Department of Barnes & Noble.
